In a move that signals renewed hope for individuals battling addiction, Governor Patrick Morrisey has awarded $80,000 in funding to a local addiction recovery facility in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

This grant is more than a financial boost, since it also serves as a powerful endorsement of peer recovery services as a crucial piece of the larger puzzle in addressing substance use.

The grant, awarded to the Mid-Ohio Valley Fellowship Home, will directly support peer recovery programs in Wood County and its surrounding communities. These services offer individuals in recovery the chance to build strong, healthy connections with people who’ve walked the same path and emerged stronger.

It’s a move that aligns closely with growing research and real-world results: recovery is most effective when it’s not done alone.

Governor Morrisey emphasized the importance of community and connection in recovery, noting that isolation is a major factor contributing to relapse. “When individuals are by themselves, they’re not connected to the family or the communities.

That’s when relapse is more likely to occur,” he stated. This grant puts the focus squarely on rebuilding those connections and creating safe spaces where recovery isn’t just possible but also sustainable.

Peer recovery specialists serve as mentors and support figures, offering guidance, accountability, and real empathy from lived experience.

The Governor’s backing of this model shows a continued commitment to long-term recovery strategies that treat addiction not just as a crisis, but as a deeply human struggle that requires compassion, community, and continued care.

The Mid-Ohio Valley, like many parts of West Virginia and neighboring regions, has seen firsthand the devastating effects of substance use. Counties like Wood, Jackson, and Pleasants have struggled with high overdose rates and generational substance dependency.

Governor Morrisey made it clear that this crisis hits home: “We all can tell personal stories about the drug epidemic... and I want to make sure that we don’t forget that.”

With every dollar going toward evidence-based solutions, communities are reclaiming hope and taking practical steps forward.

At New Horizons Recovery Centers, we believe in the same vision that Governor Morrisey is helping to champion: recovery rooted in connection, community, and compassion.
